Both partners can be sized together โ for free, in under 2 minutes โ at any UK high street jeweller: H.Samuel ยท Beaverbrooks ยท Ernest Jones ยท Goldsmiths. No purchase required. Ideal before buying engagement rings or wedding bands together.
If you want to propose with a ring without her knowing, you need her ring size without asking directly. The six methods below range from borrowing an existing ring to measuring her finger while she sleeps โ each is rated for accuracy and how discreet it is. If all else fails, order UK N (one size above the UK average) โ it can always be resized and most UK jewellers offer a free resize within 30โ90 days of purchase.
The most accurate secret method. Borrow a ring she already wears on her ring finger, place it on a flat surface, and measure the inner diameter with a ruler in mm. Return it before she notices. Look up the diameter in the Diam.(MM) column of the chart below. Accurate to within one UK letter size.
Place her ring on a piece of paper and trace both the inner and outer circles with a pencil. Return the ring immediately. Measure the inner circle diameter with a ruler in mm. This gives you the same result as measuring directly โ without needing to take the ring out of the house.
A trusted friend, sister, or mother may already know her ring size โ or can arrange to find out naturally without raising suspicion. Ask them to accompany her to a jeweller "for fun" or to look at rings together. She may try on rings and mention or be measured. Very low detectability.
Use a thin strip of paper or a piece of string and gently wrap it around her ring finger base while she is asleep. Mark the overlap, remove it, and measure in mm. This gives her circumference โ look it up in the Circ.(MM) column below. Works best if she is a deep sleeper. Afternoon naps are ideal.
Playfully compare your finger sizes together โ "I wonder if my ring would fit you?" Slide one of your own rings onto her ring finger and note how far it goes. Cross-reference with your own known ring size. Not perfectly accurate but gives a useful ballpark within 1โ2 UK letters.
Take her to a jeweller under the pretence of "looking at rings" โ many couples browse together before a proposal. She may try on rings and a staff member will offer to size her. Note the size without drawing attention to it. The most accurate option short of direct measurement โ and she will likely enjoy the trip.
The best time for couples to measure ring sizes together is in the afternoon between 2pm and 6pm at room temperature. Fingers are at their natural size โ not swollen from exercise or heat, not shrunken from cold morning temperatures. Measure both partners on the same day and at the same time for consistency.
Cut two paper strips (~10mm wide). Each partner wraps their strip around the base of their ring finger on the hand the ring will be worn โ typically the left ring finger in the UK for engagement and wedding rings. Mark the overlap with a pencil, unroll, and measure the length in mm.
Both partners should repeat their measurement three times and average the three readings. Write both measurements down. Look each one up in the Circ.(MM) column of the chart below. If between two rows, note the larger UK letter for each partner.
Wedding bands are often 4โ8mm wide. Wide bands feel tighter at the same UK letter size because more surface area contacts the finger. If ordering a band 6mm or wider, both partners should add one UK letter to their measured ring size. Ask the jeweller for specific advice on the width you have chosen.
For matching sets, wedding bands, or any engraved rings, visit a UK jeweller for a free professional sizing for both partners before ordering. Professional sizing is accurate to within 0.1mm and ensures both rings arrive in the correct size โ especially important when ordering matching sets that may be harder to resize independently.

Each partner looks up their home measurement in the Circ.(MM) column (paper/string method) or the Diam.(MM) column (ruler on existing ring). Read the UK letter in the first column โ that is your ring size. Pink starred rows (โญโ) highlight the most common women's sizes; blue starred rows (โญโ) highlight the most common men's sizes. If between two rows, always choose the larger UK letter. For wide wedding bands (6mm+), both partners should order one letter above their measured size.
