The complete guide on how to measure ring size at home โ paper strip, string, tape measure, existing ring & ring sizer methods, knuckle sizing, tools you need, full UK chart AโZ+2, surprise gift tips & free calculator
Measuring ring size at home is straightforward and accurate when done correctly. As Blue Nile, Goldsmiths UK, Daniel Wellington and Brilliant Earth all confirm, there are five reliable at-home methods: the paper strip method, the string or dental floss method, the soft tape measure method, the existing ring ruler method, and using a plastic ring sizer tool. All five methods measure your finger circumference in mm and match it to a UK letter size from A to Z+2. For an accurate home measurement, always measure the correct finger and hand in the evening at room temperature, use non-stretchy material under 1 cm wide, and repeat three times to average.
The simplest at-home ring size measurement requires only printer paper, a fine pen and a mm ruler. Wrap a thin strip around the base of your finger, mark the overlap, measure in mm, repeat three times, average the readings, and match to the chart below. The entire process takes under five minutes and costs nothing.
Printer paper + pen + ruler. Wrap at base, mark overlap, measure in mm ร 3 and average. ยฃ0 cost, ยฑ0.5mm accuracy.
Non-stretchy dental floss or cotton thread wrapped around finger, marked and measured in mm.
Flexible fabric sewing tape in mm wrapped around finger โ read circumference directly. Thin tape only.
Measure inner diameter of a well-fitting ring in mm ร ฯ (3.1416). Use a digital calliper for best accuracy.
Adjustable plastic ring sizer (under ยฃ2 from Amazon UK). Reads UK letter directly โ no conversion needed.
You need only three items from your home to measure ring size accurately โ and all three are found in the average UK household. The tools you use directly affect accuracy.
Non-stretchy, consistent width, free and available everywhere. Cut to 4โ6 mm wide ร 10 cm long.
Thin, non-stretchy and found in most bathrooms. Use plain unwaxed floss for best accuracy.
A standard ruler with clear mm markings. Transparent rulers are easier to read on short strips.
A fine ball-point or sharp pencil gives a clean mark. Avoid felt tips โ wide lines add 0.5โ1mm error.
A flexible fabric tape marked in mm. Wrap and read directly โ fastest one-step home method.
Under ยฃ2 from Amazon UK. Adjustable loop reads UK size directly โ most accurate home tool.
Avoid: elastic or ribbon (stretches, reads too small); wool or yarn (compresses under tension); cling film or kitchen foil (too rigid / too flexible); builder's steel tape (cannot wrap around a finger); wide sticky tape or plasters (over 1 cm wide, reads 1โ2 mm too large).
Measure in the early evening after a normal day. Be at comfortable room temperature (18โ22ยฐC). Avoid measuring immediately after cold weather, hot baths, exercise or very salty food โ all affect finger circumference temporarily.
Standard A4 printer paper or thin card is ideal โ it does not stretch and is free. Cut cleanly to between 4โ6 mm wide. A strip over 1 cm wide sits unevenly on the curved finger and produces an inflated reading.
Wrap at the base of the specific finger and hand where the ring will be worn. Snug means comfortable โ not pinching, but not freely rotating either. Check it can also slide over the knuckle with slight resistance.
While holding the strip in place, mark exactly where the end first meets the rest of the paper with a fine pen or sharp pencil. A wide or smudged mark adds up to 1 mm of error to the reading.
Measure from the very beginning of the strip to the pen mark in millimetres (mm). This is your finger circumference โ the core at-home ring size measurement. Record the number carefully.
Measuring three times at home and averaging reduces error from ยฑ1.5 mm to under ยฑ0.5 mm. Write all three numbers down and calculate the average โ do not rely on a single home measurement.
Find your averaged mm value in the Circ. (mm) column of the chart below. If your reading falls between two rows, always choose the larger UK size. A slightly large ring is easy to adjust; a tight ring is uncomfortable and can be unsafe.
The paper strip method uses items found in every home, costs nothing, and produces results accurate to ยฑ0.5 mm when repeated three times. It gives results equivalent to a commercial ring sizer when the correct width (under 1 cm), material (non-stretchy paper) and technique (three measurements averaged) are used.
Dental floss is the best home substitute โ thin, non-stretchy and found in virtually every bathroom. Never use elastic, wool, ribbon or stretchy string โ all compress under wrapping tension and give a smaller reading than your actual size.
Loop the floss once around the base of the correct finger. Keep it gently taut โ not stretched. Mark the overlap point with a fine-tip pen, or tie a small knot at the meeting point.
Stretch the floss flat along your ruler. Measure from start to mark in mm. Match to the Circ. (mm) column of the chart. If between sizes, choose the larger UK letter.
A thin fabric tailor's tape is the fastest single-step home method. It must be flexible fabric โ a rigid builder's steel tape cannot wrap around a finger and must never be used for ring sizing.
Place the zero end at the base of your finger, wrap once snugly, and read the mm value where the tape meets itself. This is your circumference in mm โ match directly to the chart. Repeat twice and average for best accuracy.
The ring must fit the specific finger and hand where the new ring will be worn. A ring from a different finger or opposite hand can give a result off by up to one full UK size.
Measure the inner diameter โ from one inner edge directly across to the opposite inner edge โ in mm. A digital calliper (under ยฃ10 from Amazon UK) gives the most accurate at-home diameter reading.
Multiply your diameter reading by 3.1416. Match the result to the Circ. (mm) column of the chart โ or enter the diameter into the calculator below and it converts automatically.
The ring must pass over the knuckle as well as fit at the base. For many people โ especially after age 40, during pregnancy, or those with arthritis โ the knuckle is the widest part of the finger. Measuring at home without accounting for knuckle size is one of the most common causes of an unwearable ring.
Use the same paper strip or string method at the widest part of your knuckle. Mark, measure in mm and record. Compare to your base-of-finger reading.
If knuckle is within 2 mm of base, size for the base. If knuckle reads more than 2 mm larger, use the knuckle measurement as your UK ring size reference.
Size the ring for the knuckle measurement. Use a ring adjuster insert at the base to prevent spinning. Ring adjusters are available from Amazon UK for under ยฃ3.
If knuckle is significantly larger than base, use the average of both mm readings. Example: base 53.8 mm + knuckle 57.6 mm รท 2 = 55.7 mm โ UK O or P.
Within 2 mm: size for base. | 2โ4 mm larger: average of both readings. | More than 4 mm larger: size for knuckle and use a ring adjuster at the base. For hinged or split-shank rings, the jeweller can fit directly to the knuckle measurement.
