📏 How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Method 1 — Paper Strip (Most Accurate)

1

Cut a thin paper strip

About 1 cm wide and 12 cm long. For men's larger fingers a longer strip may be needed.

2

Wrap around your finger

Wrap snugly around the base of the finger. Crucially — also check it slides over your knuckle.

3

Mark the overlap

Use a pen to mark exactly where the strip overlaps — this length is your finger circumference.

4

Measure in mm

Lay flat on a ruler. Record the mm value and use the calculator above to find your UK letter size.

5

Check the knuckle

Men with larger knuckles should size up slightly — the ring must pass over the knuckle comfortably.

Method 2 — Measure an Existing Ring

1

Use a well-fitting ring

Choose a ring that fits the exact finger you want to size — not a ring from another finger.

2

Measure the inner diameter

Use a ruler to measure straight across the inside opening of the ring in millimetres.

3

Find your UK size

Match that mm value to the Diameter (mm) column in the chart above to get your UK letter size.

📐 Conversion Formulas

Diameter → Circumference
Circumference (mm) = Diameter (mm) × π (3.14159)
Example: 17.9 mm × 3.14159 = 56.2 mm → UK Size S
Inches → Millimetres
mm = inches × 25.4
Example: 0.705″ × 25.4 = 17.9 mm → UK Size S

💡 Expert Ring Sizing Tips for Men
  • 🌅Measure in the evening — fingers are at their largest after daily activity. Morning measurements can be up to half a size smaller.
  • 🌡️Avoid measuring in cold conditions — cold fingers shrink. Men's fingers can vary by a full UK size between winter and summer.
  • 💪Active men and those who work with their hands tend to have larger, more muscular fingers — always measure the specific finger, not just the dominant hand.
  • 📐Men's wedding bands are typically 5–8 mm wide. Wide bands feel tighter — go one full UK size up from your measured size for comfort.
  • 🔁The dominant hand is usually half a size larger. Wedding rings traditionally worn on left hand in UK — measure that finger specifically.
  • 🎁Buying as a surprise? UK Size S or T for an average British man is the safest gift choice — both are easily exchanged if wrong.
  • 🦴Men with large knuckles relative to their finger base should size to fit over the knuckle, then get a ring adjuster insert fitted for a snug base fit.
  • 📏Measure at least 3 times across different days and average the results — especially if you have physically demanding work that causes daily swelling.
  • 🔧Most UK jewellers (Goldsmiths, H.Samuel, Beaverbrooks) offer free ring resizing within 30 days. Platinum resizing costs more — get it right first time.
Men's Ring Size FAQ
What is the most common men's ring size in the UK?
The most common UK men's ring sizes are S and T. Size S has a diameter of 17.9 mm and circumference of 56.1 mm, equivalent to US size 8.75. Size T is 18.2 mm diameter. Together, S and T account for the majority of men's ring purchases across British jewellers.
What UK ring size is equivalent to US size 10?
US size 10 is equivalent to UK size V (diameter 18.9 mm, circumference 59.3 mm). US size 9 ≈ UK T, US size 10.5 ≈ UK W, US size 11 ≈ UK X.
What size wedding band should I order for a man?
For a standard UK men's wedding band, Size S is the safest default gift size. If you know the man's build — slim men are typically Q–R, average R–T, larger-framed T–W. Wide bands (5 mm+) require going one UK letter size larger than measured for comfort.
How do I measure my ring size if I have large knuckles?
Wrap the paper strip at the widest point of your knuckle, not just the base of the finger. Your ring must pass over the knuckle comfortably. If the knuckle measurement is 1+ sizes larger than the base, consider a hinged or expandable band designed for large knuckles, available from specialist UK jewellers.
Do men's ring sizes differ between the UK and US?
Yes. UK uses letters (P–Z+), the US uses numbers (7.5–14 for men's sizes). They are entirely different scales. UK Size S = US 8.75, UK T = US 9.25, UK V = US 10. Always use the conversion table above when ordering from US-based retailers.
What size is a men's signet ring typically?
Men's signet rings in the UK are traditionally worn on the pinky (little) finger, which is smaller — typically UK sizes N to R. If worn on the ring finger, standard men's sizing (Q–V) applies. Hatton Garden jewellers are specialists in bespoke men's signet rings.
Can a men's ring be resized in the UK?
Yes — most gold, silver, and palladium rings can be resized 1–2 UK sizes. Platinum is harder and more expensive to resize. Rings with channel-set stones or full-eternity designs are difficult to resize. Many UK jewellers offer free resizing within 30 days of purchase.
My ring size changes between summer and winter — what should I do?
This is common, especially for men who work outdoors or exercise heavily. Fingers can vary by one full UK letter size across seasons. The standard advice: measure in the evening in normal temperature and size towards the larger measurement for everyday rings. For a wedding band, mid-measurement is the best compromise.
