• ⭕ Circumference is the most direct measurement for ring sizing: Unlike diameter — which requires measuring across the inside of a ring using calipers or a ruler — circumference can be measured by anyone at home with a paper strip. The result is directly useful for EU sizing (circumference mm = EU size number) and is easily converted to UK letters, US numbers, French and Japanese sizes using the chart or calculator above.
• 🕐 Best time to measure finger circumference: The most accurate ring circumference measurement is taken at the end of the day, in warm conditions, and after light physical activity. Fingers swell slightly in warmth and shrink in cold — a difference of up to 0.5–1.0 mm in circumference (about half a UK ring size). Measuring only in cold morning conditions can lead to ordering a ring that feels tight by the afternoon. Take 3 readings (morning, afternoon, evening) and use the average.
• 🇩🇪 EU size = circumference in mm — no conversion needed: If you are ordering a ring from a European jeweller or an international website that uses EU sizing, your ring size number is simply your finger's inner circumference in millimetres. A 50 mm circumference = EU 50. Multiply your cm measurement by 10 or divide your inch measurement by 0.0394 to get the mm circumference for an EU size lookup.
• 📏 Circumference vs diameter — which to measure: Both methods are valid, but circumference is easier to measure at home and gives a more precise result for soft tissue (fingers change shape slightly when compressed by a rigid ruler). Diameter is easier to measure on an existing ring using a ruler or calipers. If you already own a well-fitting ring, measure its inner diameter in mm and use the chart — multiply by π (3.14159) to get the equivalent circumference if needed.
• 💍 Knuckle size matters for ring circumference: Always check that your measured circumference allows the ring to pass over your knuckle. If your knuckle circumference is more than 2–3 mm larger than your base circumference, order to fit the knuckle (larger size) and use a ring size adjuster to ensure it sits snugly at the base. Hinged rings and comfort-fit bands can also help with significant knuckle-to-base size differences.
