Why Ring Size Systems Differ

There is no universal ring sizing standard. The UK system uses letters (A–Z+6) based on the inner circumference in half-millimetre steps. The US system uses numbers with quarter-size increments. The EU/ISO system uses the inner circumference in millimetres directly (e.g. EU 56 = 56 mm circumference). Japan and India use their own numeric sequences. Switzerland and France add or subtract a constant from the EU size. Always convert via diameter or circumference — never apply a fixed formula between letter systems and numeric systems.

🗺️ Ring Sizing Systems Around the World
🇬🇧

United Kingdom & Ireland

Letter-based: A to Z+6. Each half-letter = ~0.4 mm diameter increase. Average man = S or T. Also used in Australia and South Africa.

Average: S–T
🇺🇸

United States & Canada

Numeric ¼-size increments. No direct formula to UK letters — always convert via circumference. Average man = US 9–10. Also used in Mexico.

Average: US 9–9.25
🇪🇺

Europe / ISO 8653

Inner circumference in mm, rounded to nearest whole number. EU 56 = 56 mm circumference. Used across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia.

Average: EU 56–57
🇮🇳

India (BIS)

Numeric scale 1–32 based on inner circumference. Offset from EU by approximately −10 at men's average sizes. Common at Indian jewellers worldwide.

Average: IN 19–20
🇦🇺

Australia & New Zealand

Uses the same letter system as the UK but with a ½-size offset at some sizes. Broadly interchangeable with UK for most practical purchases.

Average: AU S–T
🇨🇭

Switzerland

Uses EU circumference minus 40. So EU 56 = Swiss 16, EU 57 = Swiss 17. Simple subtraction once you know the EU size.

Average: Swiss 16–17
🇨🇳

France & Russia

France uses inner diameter in mm (so 17.9 mm = French 18). Russia uses the same diameter-based system. Both differ significantly from EU circumference.

Average: FR/RU 18

💡 Conversion Tips & Common Mistakes
  • ⚠️

Never add a fixed number to convert UK to US — the relationship between UK letters and US numbers is not linear. A size conversion table or the calculator above is the only reliable method.

  • 🇪🇺

EU size = inner circumference in mm — this makes EU the easiest system to understand. If you know your EU size, your circumference in mm is the same number. EU 57 = 57 mm inner circumference.

  • 🇨🇭

Swiss size = EU size minus 40 — the simplest conversion relationship in global ring sizing. EU 56 → Swiss 16. EU 63 → Swiss 23.

  • 🇫🇷

French/Russian size = inner diameter in mm, rounded — measure diameter with calipers. 17.9 mm diameter = French 18. 18.2 mm = French 18. Rounds to nearest whole mm.

  • 🌡️

Measure in the evening at room temperature — fingers are larger in the evening and in warm conditions. Cold weather can reduce finger size by a full UK size, which throws off all conversions.

  • 🇮🇳

Indian jewellers may use their own scale — while the BIS numeric scale (1–32) is standard, some Indian jewellers use their own regional sequences. Always confirm with the specific retailer before ordering.

  • 🇦🇺

Australian sizes broadly match UK but with minor offsets — for most men's sizes (R–Z), UK and Australian sizes are the same letter. At the extremes (below L or above Z) there can be a half-size discrepancy.

Conversion FAQ
What is UK Size S in US, EU and other systems?
UK Size S (the most common UK men's size) = US 8.75 · EU 56 · India 19 · Japan 16 · Switzerland 16 · French 18 · Australia S. Inner diameter: 17.9 mm. Inner circumference: 56.1 mm.
What is US Size 10 in UK?
US Size 10 = UK Size V (inner diameter 18.9 mm, circumference 59.3 mm, EU 59, India 22, Japan 19). This is considered a large UK men's size. US Size 9 = UK T½, US Size 11 = UK X.
Is EU size the same as French size?
No — they are different systems often confused. EU/ISO size = inner circumference in mm (e.g. EU 56 = 56 mm circ). French size = inner diameter in mm, rounded (e.g. French 18 = approx 17.8–18.1 mm diameter). EU 56 ≈ French 18, but they diverge slightly at other sizes. Always convert via mm rather than equating the two directly.
What is EU 60 in UK size?
EU 60 = UK Size W (inner diameter 19.2 mm, circumference 60.2 mm). This is the start of the "extra large" UK men's range. US equivalent: US 10.5. India 23, Japan 20.
Do Japanese ring sizes match Chinese ring sizes?
Yes — Japan and China use virtually identical numeric sizing scales based on inner circumference. Japan Size 16 = China Size 16 = UK S = EU 56 = US 8.75. There are very minor rounding differences at some sizes, but for practical jewellery purchases they can be treated as equivalent.
How do I convert my EU ring size to UK?
The easiest method: your EU size equals your inner circumference in mm. Enter that mm value into the calculator above as "Circumference (mm)" and it will give you your exact UK size. Alternatively, use the conversion table — find your EU number in the EU column and read across to the UK letter.
