The complete guide on how to measure finger size for a ring โ paper strip, string, tape measure & existing ring methods, knuckle sizing, dominant hand guide, full UK finger size chart AโZ+2 & free calculator
Measuring your finger size for a ring correctly is the single most important step before purchasing any ring. In the UK, finger size for a ring is expressed as a letter from A (smallest) to Z+2 (largest), determined by the circumference of your finger in mm. The four most reliable ways to measure finger size for a ring at home are: the paper strip method, the string method, the tape measure method, and measuring an existing ring. The average UK women's finger size is UK N (53.8 mm) and the average UK men's finger size is UK T (61.4 mm). This guide covers all four methods with step-by-step instructions, a knuckle sizing guide, dominant hand tips, a full UK finger size chart, and a free calculator.
Wrap a paper strip around your finger, mark the overlap and measure the length in mm. That is your finger circumference โ match it to the UK ring size chart to get your letter size. Always measure both the base and the knuckle, measure in the evening when fingers are at their largest, and go up a size if between two measurements.
Cut thin paper, wrap around finger, mark overlap, measure in mm. Gives circumference directly. No special tools needed.
Wrap non-stretchy string around finger, mark length, lay flat and measure in mm. Identical result to the paper method.
Wrap a soft sewing tape measure in mm around the finger and read the circumference directly. One-step process, no marking needed.
Measure inner diameter of a well-fitting ring in mm, multiply by ฯ (3.1416) to calculate circumference. Best for surprise gifts.
Use standard printer paper or thin card. Cut it cleanly with scissors. Do not use tissue paper, kitchen roll, cling film or foil โ all of these stretch or compress and will give an inaccurate finger size reading.
Wrap the paper strip around the base of the specific finger and hand on which you plan to wear the ring. The strip should sit snugly โ comfortable but not pinching. Ensure the strip can also pass over the knuckle without bunching.
While holding the strip in position, use a fine-tip pen or pencil to mark exactly where the end of the strip first meets the rest of the paper. A crisp, precise mark gives a crisp, precise finger size measurement.
Place the strip flat on a ruler. Measure from the very beginning of the strip to your pen mark in millimetres (mm). This measurement is your finger circumference in mm. Write it down immediately.
Repeat the process three times. Each time the wrapping tension will vary slightly. Take the average of your three mm readings for the most accurate finger size result. A single measurement can be off by up to 1.5 mm.
Find your average circumference in mm in the Circ. (mm) column of the chart below. The UK letter in the same row is your ring finger size. If your measurement falls between two rows, always choose the larger UK size.
As confirmed by Goldsmiths and Beaverbrooks UK, fingers reach their largest size in the evening and after physical activity. Cold mornings cause fingers to shrink by up to 2 mm in circumference. Measuring your finger size for a ring in the evening at room temperature gives the most reliable result โ one that will remain comfortable throughout the day.
A soft tailor's tape is ideal. It must be flexible enough to wrap around a finger and marked clearly in millimetres. Do not use a rigid steel builder's tape โ this cannot wrap around a finger accurately and may scratch the skin.
Gently place the zero end of the tape measure at the base of the finger and wrap around once. It should be firm enough not to rotate but not so tight that it presses into the skin. Check that it passes over the knuckle comfortably.
Where the tape meets itself, read the value in mm directly. This is your finger circumference โ your ring finger size in mm. No calculation is needed. Match to the chart below.
The ring must slide over the knuckle to reach the finger base where it will sit. If your knuckle circumference is significantly larger than your finger base circumference, you must account for this when measuring your finger size for a ring. As Daniel Wellington advises, measure both the base and the knuckle and use the method below to determine the best fit.
Order at your exact base measurement. The ring will fit perfectly at both points โ no compromise needed.
Order at the knuckle size. The ring will be slightly loose at the base โ use a ring adjuster insert to tighten if needed.
Take the average of the two measurements. A jeweller can also add a comfort-fit sizing bead inside the band to hold the ring in place at the base.
Wrap the paper strip or tape measure around the widest part of your knuckle (the joint, not the base). Bend your finger very slightly โ knuckles are at their widest when the finger is slightly flexed, not fully straight. Record this mm measurement separately from your base measurement and use the guide above to determine which to order.
