The complete UK guide to measuring ring diameter โ ruler method, digital calliper, string-to-diameter conversion, tracing method & full ring diameter to UK size chart in mm and cm
Ring diameter is the distance across the inside of the ring (inner diameter) measured in millimetres (mm). It is the most direct way to find your UK ring size from an existing ring. Place the ring on a ruler and measure from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge. The average UK women's ring size M has an inner diameter of 16.5 mm, and the average men's size T is 19.56 mm.
Ring diameter is the measurement across the inside of the ring in millimetres โ the part that touches your finger. It is different from the outer diameter (which includes the metal band). UK ring sizes are based on inner circumference, but diameter is an equally valid starting point: once you have the inner diameter in mm, multiply by ฯ (3.14159) to get the circumference, then look up the UK letter in the chart below. This guide covers every method to measure ring diameter accurately at home in 2026.
Place an existing ring flat on a millimetre ruler. Measure straight across the inside of the ring โ inner edge to inner edge. Read the measurement in mm. The most common home method.
Open the calliper jaws, slide them inside the ring and expand until they touch the inner edges. Read the digital display in mm. Accurate to ยฑ0.1 mm โ the most precise at-home method available.
Place the ring flat on white paper. Carefully trace the inner circle with a sharp pencil. Measure the diameter of the traced circle with a mm ruler across the widest point through the centre.
Measure your finger circumference in mm using a string or paper strip. Divide by ฯ (3.14159) to calculate your finger diameter in mm. Then look up the diameter in the chart below for your UK size.
Place a known-size coin or object inside the ring for a quick rough comparison. A UK 1p coin is 20.3 mm diameter โ useful for checking if a ring is approximately men's size TโU range.
Take the ring to any UK jeweller. They will measure the inner diameter precisely using ring gauges and mandrels at no charge. Recommended for engagement rings or rings costing over ยฃ100.
Select a ring that fits comfortably on the same finger and hand that the new ring will be worn on. A ring that is too loose or too tight will produce an inaccurate diameter measurement โ and therefore the wrong UK size.
Lay the ring flat on a table or hard book. Make sure it is sitting perfectly level and not tilted โ any tilt will cause the measured diameter to appear smaller than it actually is.
Position your ruler so it passes through the exact centre of the ring's inner opening. Use a ruler with clear millimetre markings. Ensure the ruler's zero point aligns with one inner edge of the ring.
Read the measurement at the point where the ruler meets the opposite inner edge of the ring โ not the outer edge of the band. This inner measurement is the one that corresponds to your finger size. The outer diameter is larger by the width of the band metal and should be ignored.
Read and note the diameter in millimetres as precisely as possible โ e.g. 16.5 mm, not just "16 mm". A difference of 0.4 mm equals approximately half a UK ring size, so precision matters here.
Find your diameter measurement in the Diam. (MM) column of the chart in the next section. The corresponding UK letter is your ring size. If your measurement falls between two rows, always choose the larger UK letter size.
Switch the calliper to millimetre mode. Press the zero/reset button with the jaws fully closed. This ensures the starting measurement is accurate and there is no offset error in your reading.
Digital callipers have two sets of jaws โ the large outer jaws measure external diameter, and the small upper jaws measure internal diameter. For measuring a ring, always use the small inside jaws.
Hold the ring steady. Insert the closed inside jaws into the ring's inner opening and slowly open them until both tips touch the inner edges of the ring on opposite sides โ across the widest point through the centre.
Read the measurement displayed. A good digital calliper will show the inner ring diameter to 0.01 mm precision. For example, 16.52 mm. Round to one decimal place: 16.5 mm for practical UK ring size purposes.
Find your mm diameter reading in the Diam. (MM) column of the full UK diameter chart below. The UK letter size in the first column is your ring size. Digital callipers are accurate to within one-tenth of a UK ring size โ the best at-home method available.
Measure the inner diameter of your ring in mm using a ruler or digital calliper. Find your measurement in the Diam. (MM) column below. The UK letter in the first column is your ring size. If your measurement falls between two rows, always choose the larger UK size for a comfortable and safe fit.

Always measure the inner (internal) diameter of the ring โ the distance across the empty centre hole that touches your finger. The outer diameter includes the width of the metal band itself and will always be larger. Using the outer diameter will result in ordering a ring that is too small. For a typical 2 mm wide gold band, the outer diameter is approximately 4 mm larger than the inner diameter. For a thick 6 mm band, the outer diameter can be up to 12 mm larger โ almost a full UK letter size difference.
